Ayurveda, The Science of Life
Ayurveda, simply translates to “the science of life”. This ancient holistic medical system is over 5,ooo years old, making it perhaps the oldest medical system known today. Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine believe that everything in the universe is energy manifested in many different forms.
No matter how solid an object may seem, it is in motion at a molecular level; therefore, objects are always radiating energy & always have a specific vibration. Consequently, everything is effected, because energy is proven to interact. Human beings are energetic in nature & thus are affected by the energies of the physical environment, nutritional intake, emotional involvement, & so on. Since we also affect everything with our energy, we are all interrelating at an energetic level. It is Ayurvedic theory that has founded many healing systems, like Reiki or Acupuncture.
Ayureveda like oriental medicine, is based on the theory of the 5 elements; the Ayurvedic elements are ether, air, fire, water, & earth. These five elements are the foundation of the body’s ability to heal itself & are grouped into 3 doshas (forces) in which the body’s intelligences act. Collectively termed the “tridosha”; the three forces are Vata (ether & air), Pitta (fire & water), & Kapha (water & earth). Everyone is as combination of these forces, which together define our prakruti (metabolic constitutional quality). Usually, every person has a primary dosha that gives rise to a specific character type or dominance. Vata types tend to be thin & energetic. Pitta types tend to be muscular, focused & organized. Kapha types tend to be subdued, calm & solid. Good health depends on keeping the three doshas balanced by using the entire environment to energetically influence the qualities in the body. Ayurveda also holds that an imbalance in the body is created energetically before the imbalance is manifested in the physical form; which is why we look for the cause of disease, rather than treating just the symptoms.
Ayurveda is the sister science of Yoga, the medicine of yoga; like two sides of one coin. Born from the same ancient wise sages. The goal of Ayurveda & it’s practitioners is to find your most harmonious nature & to let who you truly are out & into the world. The beauty of this is the view of the practitioners of the patients, as whole and divine. I was taught that the ultimate goal was to help enlighten the patient to the imbalances and restrictions in their health. This allows for one’s true nature to emerge without the stress of imbalance. The mind and heart can be open, free, creative and focused for higher endeavors. Therapies can include massage, counseling, diet & lifestyle adjustments, meditation, breath work, yoga postures, cooking & herbal remedies.

What You Can Expect During a Consultation…
If you are interested in Ayurveda, holistic health or a balanced healthy life, we will probably start with a
phone call or email exchange. From there, I will send you some forms for you to fill out and bring with you to your appointment. It is a very thorough health history questionnaire, give yourself some time to fill it out the best you can. The first part of our session is based on the information you give me in the forms. Most people remark on how much time we take, as most medical doctors aren’t allowed this kind of time and space with you it is a refreshing approach. It’s essential for me to get a good picture of who you are, where you come from… what brings you here, to this moment today.
Once that feels complete, I will read your pulse on both wrists. This isn’t to check your heart rate, this is to read the energetics coursing through your body, by way of the Nadis (Prana pathways) in your circulatory system. I may also take note of specific features, marks or scars on your face, ask to look at your tongue or palpate the stomach depending on the concerns at hand. All of this information gives me clues as to how help you the best I can.
I may give you recommendations right there for you to take home. I will also create a treatment plan for you, based on your needs, which we will discuss while we are together.
